“We’re Known by the Company We Keep”

Eggstravaganza & Ilya Abelsky

LL&A has worked closely with Ilya Abelsky, the noted designer and creator of a 2,000 piece collection of eggs that continues the tradition of the heralded 19th century Carl Faberge.

LL&A assists in formulating marketing plans by booking new shows and handling public relations for the tour of Abelsky’s miniature jeweled eggs.

Abelsky is a rare combinations of Russian entrepreneur and brilliant designer, who has profited from his country’s movement to democracy and its acceptance of an open-market system. The vibrant color, exquisite styling, and expert craftsmanship of Abelsky’s Russian miniature eggs are recognized around the world. He has exhibited his creations in London, Paris, Vienna and Berlin – as well as major cities across the United States.

Although many of Abelsky’s designs are inspired by Faberge, his exhibits now include eggs that are definitely American. They are special patriotic eggs including one with the American flag on both sides and colored and shaped like the American Capitol, and the God Bless America Egg. The eggs come both as a pendant and as a pendant-locket that opens to show a special American icon inside – either the Statue of Liberty or the World Trade Towers.

The eggs were created by Abelsky to honor those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attack on his adopted country.

Abelsky’s collection also includes reproductions of Faberge’s most popular creations. One of Abelsky’s most popular is a reproduction of Faberge’s design that features the double headed Russian Imperial Eagle on one side and the Russian Imperial Cross on the other.

The brilliant color, sophisticated styling and expert “Old World” craftsmanship of Abelsky’s miniature eggs are considered unique in the jewelry industry. While original Faberge eggs are normally kept behind glass and untouchable in the world’s finest museums and private collections, Abelsky’s creations are affordable and touchable by all.

Abelsky’s miniature are approximately 3/4 inch tall. They are made out of sterling silver with 24, 18 and 14 carat gold overlay and brilliant multicolored enamel.

Those who wish to order eggs from Eggstravaganza and those who wish to schedule a special event with a personal appearance by Abelsky may do so by contacting larry@lubenow.com.

Empress Caroline Exhibit

858-ct. Empress Caroline

Conventional wisdom once told us that beautiful gem-quality emeralds didn’t come from the United States or Canada. Colombia was heralded as the king of emeralds and Brazil is also mentioned. In the last few years, fine emeralds have also been found in Afghanistan.

But that was all before Jamie Hill, a 35-year-old treasure hunter, discovered the Empress Caroline and 3,000 carats of fine emeralds in November 1998 in his backyard in what is now the North American Emerald Mines in the Brushy Mountain hamlet of Hiddenite, NC, some 50 miles northwest of Charlotte.  Hill’s discovery has been a big hit with the national media. Time, USA Today, Good Morning America, the Oprah Winfrey show, Inside Edition, the Learning Channel and People Magazine covered the spectacular find.

3.40-ct. Heart of Carolina*

Conventional wisdom in the gem world was set on its ear! Such jewelry industry publications as Jewelers Circular Keystone, Lapidary Journal, National Jeweler, Color Stone and Rock & Gem joined the North American emerald chorus.

Not to be undone, almost every major newspaper and television news station in North Carolina trumpeted the find of the Empress Caroline and its accompanying royal court of North Carolina emeralds.

KITE EMERALD once was worn by Jamie's grandmother. The 20-year-old stone is made up of 50.46 carat of North Carolina emeralds.
THE CAROLINA DUTCHESS
weighs 8.85 carats and is valued at $100,000.

Owned by the Southeastern Emerald Consortium, the 858 carat Empress is the largest rough cut emerald in North America. The consortium, made up of nine retail jewelers exhibited the Empress in their markets in 2000 with great success and fanfare. The consortium, made up of six North Carolina, two Virginia and one Pennsylvania jewelers, retained Larry Lubenow & associates to arrange the 2001 tour of the empress.

3.37-ct. Princess of Carolina*

Gary Roskin, gemstone editor of JCK, has been quoted as saying the North Carolina emeralds are comparable to the finest gems coming out of Colombia. The US gem market evidently agrees. A high quality 88 carat was appraised at $40,000 a carat. The stone was cut and faceted into two significant gems: The Prince at 7.85 carats and the Carolina Queen at 18.88 carats. The Prince was sold for $500,000 -- $64,000 per carat.

Those in the gemstone industry are amazed that the North Carolina emeralds were found at a depth of only 12 feet -- in stark contrast to deep mines elsewhere.

This 300 pound, 800 million old crystal, the largest single quartz crystal ever discovered was found by Jamie Hill on his property in Hiddenite in only 6 inches of dirt. Jamie dug it out with a screw driver.

Jewelers who want to exhibit the Empress Caroline may do so by contacting Lubenow at larry@lubenow.com or calling him at 512-335-9233. Hill is available to make personal appearances at the exhibits to tell the amazing story of how he discovered the richest emerald deposit in North America.

He expects his North American Emerald Mines to continue to shatter Conventional Wisdom.

EightStar Diamond Company

EightStar Diamond Company has the world’s largest perfect-cut diamond – and they can prove it.

With the FireScope, the company’s patented light-mapping device that allows diamond cutters to analyze every single diamond facet.

The diamond, “The American Star” is a 13.42 carat (D/Flawless graded by the Gemological Institute of America) is valued at $2.3 million. The “American Star” -- on a national tour of EightStar’s premier dealers – underwent nearly a year of gemological study using the FireScope. Richard von Sternberg, EightStar’s president, said the incredible gem took six weeks to recut – including  three days to polish one particularly stubborn facet.

Industry observers say that EightStar took a big gamble in recutting the American Star. “People said we were crazy to risk millions of dollars improving a diamond that was already considered a magnificent gem,” von Sternberg says.  “But we thought it was a crime to deprive such a valuable stone of the beauty it  attained  when crafted to absolute perfection.  The American Star is proof that every diamond reaches its full potential for beauty using the FireScope,” von Sternberg added.

Apparently the American Gem Society (AGS) agrees.  The group has asked EightStar to help it develop a cut-grading standard for diamonds, using the FireScope.

Perfection in cutting and polishing diamonds has been a long-sought goal of the diamond industry.  “To reach perfection,” von Sternberg said, “diamonds must have facets as precisely honed and calibrated as the mirrors on a space telescope.  Such perfection is possible, “ he said, “only with a scientific guidance tool.”

By creating the American Star and sending it on a national tour, Eight Star hopes to give customers the opportunity to see for themselves that a new day has dawned in terms of visual beauty of diamonds. To make sure that customers understand and appreciate the full significance of the  American Star, Eight Star has decided to show it only in premier jewelry stores committed to the highest standards of knowledge and quality.

“Seeing the American Star is as much a learning as an aesthetic experience,” von Sternberg says.

Larry Lubenow & Associates has been chosen to coordinate the American Star tour and is responsible for its public relations.  Those wanting to participate in the tour should contact us at larry@lubenow.com.
